Numerical and Experimental Comparison of Spinnaker Aerodynamics Close to Curling

When sailing downwind with a spinnaker, the “verge of curling” is one common recommendations that sailors follow for efficient sailing. Wind tunnel experiments on spinnaker models conducted by Aubin et al. (2017) in Twisted Flow Tunnel Yacht Research Unit University Auckland have shown curling can be related to better performance at Apparent Angle ≥ 100°. In present article, we will focus aerodynamic jump observed AWA = 100°, where drive force increases up 15% when sail starts flap. Thanks four triggered HD cameras and coded targets stuck sail, three flying shapes are reconstructed photogrammetry different sheet lengths from over trimmed flapping occurrence. The pimpleFOAM solver OpenFOAM used simulate aerodynamics rigid extracted shapes. Results highlight ability model experimental closed significant confinement effect roof wind tunnel.
